Where Miranda cast are now - from affair to Downton and break from showbusiness (2024)

IT WAS the self-titled comedy that shot Miranda Hart to fame, and into the nation’s… well, hearts.

BBC hit Miranda told the story of its awkward star, who was always getting herself in funny situations, while working in a joke shop with her best friend Stevie - played by Sarah Hadland.

It was rumoured this week that the show could be returning after seven years - although Miranda herself has since claimed there is "nothing planned at this time".

But what have the cast been up to after leaving the series behind?

Miranda became a household name thanks to the show - and ended up bagging three Royal Television Society awards, four British Comedy Awards and four BAFTA nominations.

The 49-year-old went on to star in Call The Midwife as Camilla ‘Chummy’ Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne, and she’s even been in Hollywood films - including Spy, alongside Melissa McCarthy, and Emma, opposite Anya Taylor-Joy.

While Miranda tends to keep her private life private, it’s believed she’s not married and doesn’t have kids.

However, in January 2021, Miranda was devastated when her dog Peggy died and announced she would be “taking a break” from showbiz to grieve the pet she called her “rock”.

Miranda has also revealed she suffers from anxiety and agoraphobia.

In 2018, she said: “When a low mood sinks in, you find yourself almost revelling in the awful world news and feeling self-pityingly about the tiniest things.

Sarah Hadland

10

Sarah Hadland, 50, played Miranda’s best friend Stevie Sutton in Miranda.

Sarah has been in loads of TV shows since, including comedies W1A and The Job Lot, as well as playing the voice of Dizzy in Bob the Builder.

She even had a minor role in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

In 2019, Sarah said she regularly speaks to the Miranda cast.

She told The Sun: “I speak to the Miranda cast all the time.

“I feel lucky to have done a job that has given me a good friend for life.

“I’d love to do another series, but it’s up to Miranda because she writes the show. Never say never!

Tom Ellis

10

TV hunk Tom Ellis played Miranda’s crush in the show - and eventually became her husband.

He’s gone on to some great jobs since - including playing Oscar Wilde in Family Guy.

But the role that gave him international fame was playing the lead role in Lucifer on Netflix, which ran for six series until 2021 - for which Tom has since admitted demanded a gruelling training regime.

The father-of-three is currently married to his second wife, American screenwriter Meaghan Oppenheimer, after divorcing EastEnders actress Tamzin Outhwaite in 2013, when he admitted to having an affair while filming in the US.

A source told The Sun at the time about the divorce: "Tamzin has cited adultery, so she will have a huge advantage when it comes to negotiations.

“Tom’s a reasonable bloke and as it’s pretty cut and dried they could be divorced within months."

Patricia Hodge

10

West End star Patricia Hodge has taken on many roles since her time as Miranda’s pestering mum Penny in the hit TV series, and even bagged an OBE for her services to drama in 2017.

Immediately following her role in Miranda, the 75-year-old played Mrs Miranda Pelham in Downton Abbey, and appeared in A Very English Scandal which was based on the Jeremy Thorpe saga alongside Hugh Grant.

Patricia has most recently been seen in BritBox drama Murder in Provence.

In her personal life, she faced heartbreak in 2016 when her husband of 40 years Peter Douglas Owen died of heart complications after being diagnosed with dementia.

Patricia opened up about her guilt at not being able to save her husband, telling Saga magazine: "It's a lingering guilt and guilt is one of the most difficult things to deal with.

"Towards the end of his life, I wasn't sure if he recognised me as his wife, or whether he thought I was a carer. That was the hardest part, making the decisions that you would not want to make in a million years."

Sally Phillips

10

Actress Sally Phillips was already well-known for playing Bridget Jones’ sweary best friend Shazza in all three Bridget Jones films before starring as Tilly in Miranda.

The 51-year-old became an advocate for Down's Syndrome after her eldest son Ollie was diagnosed with the condition, and in 2016 presented a one-off BBC documentary about the condition.

However, the mum-of-three split from husband Andrew Bermejo in 2017 after 14 years of marriage - and has claimed it was due to their son’s diagnosis.

Sally revealed on podcast Soul Tears: "We'd had a divide that started after Ollie in that my husband and I dealt with the diagnosis in very different ways."

She’s got loads of films in the pipeline, including Banking on Mr Toad, Coffee Wars and How To Please A Woman.

James Holmes

10

James Holmes played the small part of Clive in Miranda, and has starred in a few different TV shows as smaller parts since.

However, he has unfortunately not been as successful as the main cast.

In 2017, he was in one episode of Sherlock, and then he played Twitcher 1 in an episode of Worzel Gummidge last year.

Bo Poraj

10

Between 2012 and 2014, Bo Poraj played the role of Mike Jackford in Miranda.

He went on to star as Bonacieux in the BBC series The Musketeers.
