Scoop, which facilitates carpooling for commuters, laid off over 40 employees. The layoff comes seven months after the startup cut 92 employees in April, saying at the time that it was operating at a “fraction” of its normal volume due to offices closing across the country.

Cheetah, which delivers groceries and other supplies to restaurants, laid off an unknown number of employees last month. Following the layoff, the startup released a talent directory highlighting a few of its laid-off employees (see link below👇)

No public announcement of the layoff exists, but the company’s talent directory explains that “COVID-19 has hit the restaurant industry hard, and unfortunately Cheetah had to part with some of its most talented team members.”

In April, Cheetah announced that it had raised $36 million and was pivoting to sell groceries to consumers, not just wholesalers.

The Cheetah layoff list contains 26 people across multiple functions, based in the U.S. and Israel.

Quibi, the hyped short-form video streaming service, shut down two weeks ago despite raising $1 billion in funding. In the wake of the shutdown, a layoff list has emerged showcasing ex-employees looking for new opportunities (see link below👇)

Started by entertainment and tech veterans Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, Quibi launched with much fanfare six months ago. The company hoped to create a new streaming service specifically geared towards smartphone consumption, in part by creating 10-minute episodes. However, the service struggled to gain traction, signing up only 500,000 subscribers compared to its initial target of 7 million.

Quibi’s layoff list contains roughly 150 people across multiple functions, primarily in the Los Angeles area.

CodeCombat, a programming game for learning how to code, laid off 8 employees, the company’s CEO told Layoffs.fyi. The Y Combinator graduate has raised $8.6 million to date, according to Crunchbase.

The company prepared a talent directory to help departing employees find new jobs (see link below 👇). CodeCombat’s layoff list includes 7 salespeople and 1 product manager across the country.

Alto Pharmacy, an online delivery startup for prescription drugs, laid off 47 employees (6%), a company executive told Layoffs.fyi. The San Francisco-based startup is just months removed from a $250 million funding round led by Softbank.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a boon to telemedicine and prescription delivery startups in general. With fresh funding in the bank and the tailwinds of the pandemic, it’s not clear why Alto needed to perform a layoff.

Alto sent the following written statement:

Last week we made the difficult decision to eliminate a small percentage of the roles at Alto. As we continue to scale, we recognize the need to streamline operations and reallocate resources to better serve our customers and our continued long term growth. For those affected, we are grateful for their contributions to Alto and are working to support them with a significant severance and extended healthcare coverage. We are continuing to hire for roles critical to our mission and the service of our patients. We have never been more encouraged about our progress in building Alto and the need for a better pharmacy experience.

GoBear, an online financial services “supermarket” based in Singapore, laid off 11% of its workforce in early September. The company recently released a GoBear Talent Directory featuring some of its former employees (see link 👇).

GoBear’s layoff affected employees in its operations, product, and technology teams across offices in Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, and Ukraine. The company now plans to focus on its growth areas of digital lending and insurance brokerage services.

[As an aside, GoBear feels like an ominous name choice for a financial services startup…maybe “bear market” means something different in Southeast Asia? At least their bear is cute!]

🌎 Multiple locations ∙ 👩 250 employees (25%) ∙ 🖥 Multiple departments

Mozilla Corporation, best known for developing the Firefox web browser, laid off 250 employees globally. The pandemic’s toll on revenue also caused the company to close its Taipei operations.

Going forward, Mozilla will shift its focus to new revenue-generating products, such as its VPN service, and other security and privacy products. It plans to reduce its investment in developer tools, internal tooling, and platform feature development.

Once the world’s second-most popular browser, Firefox has seen its market share dwindle over the past decade. Its primary revenue model, search engine ads, is susceptible to an economic downswing that curtails global ad spending. In addition, Firefox’s U.S. revenue comes from a recently-extended deal with Google, making Mozilla financially dependent on its rival.

In conjunction with the layoff, Mozilla’s CEO told staff that the company would be creating an opt-in talent directory, to be launched next Monday, August 17. However, the Mozilla layoff list appears to already be live, with over 50 former employees featured (see link 👇).

Mozilla is giving laid-off employees severance pay equivalent to base pay through December 31, along with health benefits through the end of the year.

🌎 Edinburgh ∙ 👩 300 employees (20%) ∙ 🖥 Multiple departments

Skyscanner, a flight comparison website based in Scotland, laid off 300 employees (20%) globally last month. The company recently launched an official talent directory featuring a couple dozen of its former employees (see link 👇).

In conjunction with its layoff, Skyscanner plans to close or scale back many of its global offices outside the U.K. The company’s revenues “have been hit significantly,” and it expects a full recovery to be “several quarters or possibly years away” due to the pandemic’s disruption on travel.

Skyscanner is owned by Ctrip, the largest online travel agency in China, which acquired the startup in 2016 for $1.75 billion.

🌎 Montevideo ∙ 👩 At least 30 employees ∙ 🖥 Engineering

The Appraisal Lane, an Austin-based startup that develops an app where vehicle owners can get an appraisal with an offer to buy, has laid off its engineering team in Uruguay, according to LinkedIn posts from multiple company representatives.

Following the layoff, The Appraisal Lane released a talent directory featuring 30 of its ex-engineers (see link 👇).

The Appraisal Lane was founded in 2013 and raised $1.8 million in its sole round of funding.

🌎 Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Mumbai ∙ 👩 At least 83 employees ∙ 🖥 Customer Experience, Business Development

Klook, a travel activities booking platform backed by SoftBank, set up a talent directory to support recently-departed employees (see link 👇). In April, the company laid off or furloughed more than 300 employees. That spring Klook saw its revenue drop by as much as 90% as global travel abruptly halted.

It’s not clear whether the Klook talent directory is meant to cover the April layoffs, or if there’s been a new round since then. The website, launched 2 weeks ago, says that the company “recently had to part with great people.”

The Klook layoff list features 83 ex-employees, most of whom were in its Customer Experience or Business Development departments.

The company has witnessed a rebound recently as it caters to the rising demand in staycations.
